I can't seem to find it in the specs, so I am asking here -- does this unit have a built-in battery that will allow it to continue functioning independently for a short period of time if it is unplugged from the OBD-II data port?

Please refer to the product page. There is no built-in battery or BMS as OBD-II port is always powered.
