Using SoftwareSerial over 38400bps can cause loss of data. In your case, simply use an Arduino MEGA which has 4 hardware serial UARTs. If MEGA 2560 is too big for you, check out this:

ISO-9141-2 is supported. It's different from ISO-9141.

All these modes are supported by the adapter. But your car's ECU may not respond to some of them.

You can modify the code and outputs anything you want to know via Serial.
