OBDII v2 Freediag support?

Should freematics OBDII v2 function with freediag?
I'm able to get the adapter to respond as a "generic" adapter, but communications fail because of a non-standard response to an ELM command.
Freematics is returning a "?" where a real adapter would respond with "PROTOCOL ERROR" or something similar.
So, is there possibly a firmware update available for the OBDII v2 to make the ELM327 support 'more compliant' for functionality with freediag?
Or, is the source for the OBDII v2 available so that I might just try updating that response, rather than mucking with the freediag code.
